Renewing our connections, reviving our spirits
As the warmth of spring soon approaches, we are reminded of the beauty and strength of our people, our traditions and our natural surroundings. This season presents a period of renewal in nature as well as in the spirit of our community. It is a time for growth, reflection and connection.
Spring in the Chickasaw Nation brings life to the natural beauty of our 13 counties of south-central Oklahoma. The vibrant colors of blooming vegetation, the sights and sounds of wildlife reemerging and the warm, fresh air inspires us to move forward with optimism and purpose. It is a season to honor the deep bond our people have shared with the land for generations, which has sustained our tribe for millennia.
The Chickasaw National Recreation Area offers a variety of outdoor and leisurely activities as the weather begins to warm. This area of land was sold to the federal government by our ancestors with the intention of preserving its beauty, springs and wildlife from commercial and private interests. Thanks to their foresight, visitors are still able to take in the scenery of this historic area while camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and more.
At the Chickasaw Cultural Center, several events will take place in the coming months, including the annual Three Sisters Celebration beginning March 18. Throughout our history, Chickasaws have signified the changing of seasons with the planting of the “three sisters” crops, corn, beans and squash. This planting method allows each crop to rely on the other as they grow, just as our people have always done. We rely on each other, our families and our community for support and encouragement.
The Artesian Arts Festival returns in early April to celebrate First American art and artists. At this annual festival, which takes place in the Artesian Plaza in Sulphur, Oklahoma, visitors will have the chance to see diverse works of arts, from paintings and photography to beadwork and pottery. The festival will also feature family-friendly music, dance activities and food.
As we celebrate the blessings of spring, let us also remember the values that make us a strong and successful tribe – values like resiliency, unity and a deep respect for our history and culture. Our ancestors passed down the wisdom and lessons to sustain us, and it is our responsibility to carry their legacy forward so that the next generations of Chickasaws may continue to prosper.
Let this spring be a reminder of our shared strength and the bright future ahead as we continue to work together to continue to build a thriving and abundant community for all Chickasaws. We wish you a wonderful season full of growth, renewal and hope.
