Chickasaw women: A matrilineal heritage of servant leadership
This month, as we observe Women’s History Month, we honor the generations of Chickasaw women whose leadership, knowledge and impact have shaped the Chickasaw Nation since time immemorial.
Chickasaw women have always been central to our unity, strength and progress as a community. Throughout history to the present day, they have been culture bearers, teachers and innovators. They have preserved our language and values and have advanced the progress of the Chickasaw Nation in tremendous ways.
Historically, Chickasaw women held respected roles within the Chickasaw society, often participating in manufacturing, agriculture, politics and warfare. Their influence ensured that knowledge was passed from one generation to the next. Even during times of adversity, Chickasaw women demonstrated remarkable strength, adapting while holding fast to who we are as a people.
Today, that legacy continues. Chickasaw women serve the Chickasaw Nation and larger society in immeasurable ways, as elected officials, health care professionals, educators, artists, entrepreneurs, military, teachers, legal practitioners and more. They lead programs that strengthen families, advance education and promote wellness. They inspire our youth with their countless examples of service and leadership.
Women’s History Month is an opportunity to honor the contributions of the dynamic women of the Chickasaw Nation and to encourage the next generation. This month, we will recognize and share many of their stories here in the Chickasaw Times and across various tribal outlets.
March also marks the beginning of spring, a season of renewal and growth. As warmer weather approaches so do many of the activities that bring our communities together. Across the Chickasaw Nation, springtime is a season of learning, gathering and movement. Families may enjoy events, youth activities and cultural programs that celebrate life and community.
The Chickasaw Cultural Center will offer several celebrations and events in the coming months, beginning this month with the annual Three Sisters Celebration March 17-21. The Artesian Arts Festival returns to Sulphur, Oklahoma, in early May to celebrate and showcase First American art and artists. The festival will feature family-friendly music, dance activities and food. Families will also enjoy the many opportunities for outdoor and leisure activities available across the Chickasaw Nation.
The changing season and natural growth remind us that the Chickasaw Nation also continues to grow and evolve as we work to meet the needs of Chickasaws across the country. Because of the foundation laid by those before us, and those who remain dedicated to our mission today, we continue to build a thriving Chickasaw Nation for the following generations. We wish you all a great season and hope you enjoy all that spring has to offer.
