Lisa Billy tapped for state leadership role

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma House District 42 Rep. Lisa Johnson-Billy has been appointed to a leadership position by Oklahoma Speaker of the House Jeff Hickman, R-Fairview.

Rep. Hickman named Rep. Billy as co-floor leader Jan. 8. She will share duties with Rep. Jason Nelson, R-Oklahoma City. Together they are responsible for developing the calendar and directing floor activity, including the scheduling of bills and resolutions for votes on the floor.

Rep. Billy is a Chickasaw citizen and former Chickasaw Nation legislator. She won the District 42 seat in 2004, becoming the first woman, first Native American and first Republican elected to the district which encompasses all or parts of Cleveland, Garvin, Grady and McClain counties.

“I am very grateful Speaker Hickman asked me to serve in this role,” said Rep. Billy. “Debating bills and casting votes gets all the attention, but the process behind the scenes is where the rubber meets the road. I really believe the house has a great opportunity to advance a conservative, Oklahoma-values agenda and I am glad that I get to be a part of it.”

Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby congratulated Rep. Billy on her leadership role.

“Lisa Billy is well-suited to this position because she understands the legislative process and is committed to serving the best interests of all Oklahomans,” said Gov. Anoatubby. “We are very proud of the work she has done as a member of the Oklahoma House. She has the intelligence, dedication and commitment to serve the people of Oklahoma well in this position.”

Rep. Billy organized the Native American House Caucus and served as assistant majority whip for the Oklahoma House before accepting the new post.

The 55^th Oklahoma Legislature convenes Feb. 2.
