Community, Camps and Culture

Happy 4th of July! We hope you had a fun and safe holiday with family and friends. This is a celebration to honor the liberties that have defined our country since its formation. Independence Day reminds us of the enduring spirit of freedom, self-determination and the pursuit of opportunity.

This holiday is also a time for celebration and gratitude. We honor those who have sacrificed to protect the freedoms we enjoy, and we celebrate their service to our country and valuable contributions to our tribe.

Many of our Chickasaw warriors joined us last month at the WinStar Convention Center for our eighth annual Chickasaw Veterans Conference. This conference is a celebration of each of our veterans and former service members, as well as those still actively serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Throughout history, the Chickasaw warrior tradition has helped our tribe survive and flourish in the face of adversity. Through military service in modern times, Chickasaws have continued to keep this essential aspect of our heritage alive. We are proud that the Chickasaw tradition of bravery and selfless service remains.

Here in the Chickasaw Nation, we have much to look forward to. Summer is a vibrant season across our communities, filled with cultural, educational and family-centered events. A variety of youth camps are ongoing this month, and there are several opportunities to learn about and engage with our culture and celebrate who we are as Chickasaws, from stomp dances at Kullihoma to cultural classes at the Chickasaw Cultural Center.

At the heart of these events and programs are community and the ties that bind us together, support one another and strengthen our tribe. Our Chickasaw community is more than a collection of individuals. It is a source of hope, courage and unity. As a community, we work hard to uplift one another, honor our traditions, celebrate our culture and build a future where every Chickasaw can thrive.

One area where continued investment is making a powerful difference is in youth development. Through Toksali SMART, a program that empowers hundreds of youths each summer through career development, life skills and cultural education, young Chickasaws are not only learning valuable job skills, but also deepening their connection to our tribe.

Additionally, for more than 20 years, the Chickasaw Arts Academy has provided opportunities for youth to connect with our Chickasaw heritage through the arts and encouragement to look forward and imagine new possibilities. Students use this opportunity to gain new knowledge and insights, explore their creativity and share their own unique perspective and artistry.

The strength of the Chickasaw Nation lies in the strength and vitality of our people. Supporting Chickasaws in all facets of life and at all ages is the cornerstone of our mission to enhance the overall quality of life of the Chickasaw people. Because we believe healthy, resilient and unified people form the foundation of a strong Chickasaw Nation.

As we celebrate this holiday, let us also reflect on the unique independence we hold dear as a nation. We wish you a safe and joyful celebration. Happy Independence Day!
